Dimes in New York has inspired countless odes to its playful California vibe — only, restaurant co-founders Alissa Wagner and Sabrina De Sousa hail from New Jersey, and they don’t claim California as inspiration. At the same time, the restaurant Sunday in Brooklyn looks more typical of Santa Monica than its own New York borough. The Oaxacan mocha is the most popular drink at BLVD MRKT’s Cafe Santo. This Oaxacan coffee bar is stationed right at the entry to the shipping container food hall and serves brioche french toast, breakfast sandwiches, and quiche as well. Prepare to stay awhile at Mandarin Coffee in Pasadena, which is located at the Burlington Arcade’s glass-covered courtyard.

Barn-like house

The ceiling and exposed ducts are brick red, with sage-green accents in the dining space below. Banquettes upholstered in leather are wrapped in wooden louvres and illuminated with domed copper lights. The Gucci store in Beverly Hills has its own Italian restaurant on the top floor. The intimate 50-cover eatery is designed to look like the fashion house's restaurant in Florence, with a marble entrance and tapestry rugs spread over wooden parquet flooring.

You’ll find UCLA students sipping classic espressos while studying for their Classics 10 midterm on the back patio and CorePower yogis popping in for a post-class energizer. This new spot in Silver Lake is a throwback to an old-school coffee house. With all the staples of a good cafe—great coffee, books, and music—Cafe Nido encourages people to make new connections, strengthen old ones, and exchange ideas, experiences, and more. This place is perched atop the Topanga Hills and will make you feel like you’re in a treehouse. If you’re looking to disconnect from the city and get outdoors, look no further. WAFI Coffee is named after the West African Farmers Initiative, a collective of West African farmers who supply the beans for this roving bicycle coffee bar.

Though known for their made-in-house bread, their coffee is also noteworthy. Come for the smooth espresso drinks and ready-made breakfast sandwich, stay for the endless and delicious glutenous selection. This South Bay gem is the perfect cozy cafe to nestle in and play some board games in, or to pop in on a Tuesday for some house-made tamales. Sip on their fan-favorite Iced Shaken Espresso in their outdoor seating area (which is only two blocks from the Redondo Beach sand, by the way). If you’re looking for a day trip to Huntington Beach, this trendy number is located in Huntington Harbour—only a five minute drive from the HB sand. Vibe in this woman-owned, basketball-themed cafe while listening to throwback R&B and hip hop hits, and enjoying their house-made bread or cakes.

Whether you’re looking for cozy, chic, classic, or above all, just plain caffeine, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite coffee shops worth a visit in LA. The colorful facade, warm interior, and honey lavender lattes are what make Bloom & Plume one of LA’s most stylish coffee bars. Co-owner Maurice Harris has ample skill as an artist and floral designer and obsesses over both in his Historic Filipinotown cafe. Food is available too, including gluten-free vegan doughnuts and a bacon biscuit sandwich.

Does your business rank among the best in California?

Coffee drinks are available any time of day and are best enjoyed on the pleasant patio if the weather permits. Though the coffee drinks are the specialty at Tilt, the matcha and other tea offerings are extensive. Located on the bottom floor of the Medallion apartments, Tilt is the place for coffee enthusiasts who crave good service and are in the mood for a strong single-origin cold brew. Culver City's modernist Cognoscenti Coffee started in 2009 and is staffed by friendly baristas who know everything about coffee.

Elastika, located beneath its namesake sculpture in The Moore, combines a modern design with the building’s historical features. The interior, a collaboration between WoodHouse and ICRAVE, includes an 18-seat bar, velvet banquettes, a semi-private dining area for up to 12, and a lounge near the original staircase. The renovation added a new skylight and a sidewalk patio with greenery. Furniture throughout the restaurant is from Brazil-based Sossego, using sustainably harvested wood. The art collection, curated by Miami’s Monica Kalpakian, features pieces like Rob Pruitt’s “US (detail), 2013” from Rosa de la Cruz’s collection.

Plus I’m one of those people who actually prefers the sun to filter in in the morning; I don’t like sleeping in pitch black. Offering privacy without blocking the whole window and more romantic in style than top-down/bottom-up shades, sheer café curtains can channel a cottage kitchen or Paris bistro (I’m a big fan of the look at New York’s Corner Bar). In our space, I knew they’d lend the same timelessness that we embrace in all of our furnishings, decor, and paint colors.

Plus, since it’s a flower shop, this is also a good place in Los Angeles County for anyone who needs to get a gift for that special someone. Founded in 2012, Beachwood Cafe is one of the best cafes in Los Angeles and is located in the historic Beachwood Canyon neighborhood where the iconic Hollywood Sign is located. It’s a cute coffee shop in Los Angeles that specializes in farm-to-table fare with Asian, American, and even Scandinavian influences. It’s a nice place to stop by for a quick coffee break in a quiet place, and a small brunch like a vegan burrito or their famous French toast.

Instead, Neighborhood takes things to a new level with a beautiful Japandi coffee shop design that lets in plenty of the LA sun and invites customers in with its charming natural simplicity. In addition to some exceptionally good brews, Neighborhood also offers delightful little snacks or “bites,” including chia parfait and delectable pastries with vegan and GF options also available. In the late ’70s, as the New York Times would note a decade later, a “cafe society” emerged at Venice restaurant West Beach Cafe, where architects, artists, and other tastemakers gathered daily.

The Café Affetto has a sleek, modern design that sets it apart from most classic-style espresso machines. The machine is available in white, black, or gray colorways, and each design has copper accents on both the brew head and the bottom of the drip tray. This minimalist cafe features a rooftop seating area overlooking Western Avenue, allowing you to people-watch while sipping the best coffee in Koreatown.

Restaurateurs have successfully channeled California ideals into unique, thoughtful restaurants in and out of the state, but it requires serious effort not to fall back on stereotypes. Over the last few years, California, and not just LA, has begun to set the national culinary tone. The city and the state are poised to establish a new, lasting legacy as one of America’s culinary destinations. California-style restaurants can help or hurt that effort, not only in the ways they represent California in their food, but by how they present it in their dining rooms.
